The second generation of Machina's Sentience program was composed of two prototypes: SC2-1 "Li" and SC2-2 "Zen". While the first generation prototype (SC1-0 Yanni, AKA Enforcer) was directly patterned after a fully functioning adult human brain and thus shared many of its templates' basic personality traits, the SC2 series was a much more ambitious project in the field of non-biological sentience.

A new neural template was built from the ground up, allowing the SC2 prototypes to be created as metaphorical blank slates. As a result, even though both generations have the same titanium endoskeleton, ultrapolymer synthflesh and brain-analogue CPU, the two new prototypes' minds were developed procedurally, allowing for uncanny and unique human personality and behaviour for each prototype according to its relationships and learning experiences.

So, with only a few months of existance both new prototypes developed in very different directions. SC2-1 "Li" is calm, straightforward and decided, while SC2-2 "Zen" is lively, impulsive and compassionate. A rather interesting unintended effect of their natural mental evolution is that the two SC2 prototypes started calling and treating each other as sisters even though no one ever referred to them as such, with Li being recognized as the "older" sibling and Zen as the younger.
